To date, one of the famous American
musicians who converted to Islam and subsequently quitted the music industry is
“Loon” as the stage name now Bears Amir Junaid Muhadith
Chauncey Hawkins born in Harlem, started his music career as a member of Mase‘s rap collective Harlem World and then became part of P. Diddy‘s Bad Boy Records under the name Loon. He released his self-titled debut album Loon and made many guest appearances on songs of the R&B and hip hop genres. In 2004, Loon left Bad Boy Records to start his own label, Boss Up Entertainment.
Loon converted to Islam in December 2008 after a trip to Abu Dhabi, UAE. Born Chauncey Lamont Hawkins, he changed his name to Amir Junaid Muhadith, travelling to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the holiest site of Islam to perform Umrah. After having converted to Islam, he subsequently ended his music career. He moved to Egypt where he lived until 2011. Wikipedea
Loon, who belongs to the former P. Diddy Bad Boy records quitted his
profession as a music artist after embracing Islam in 2008. He adopted the new
name – Amir Junaid Muhadith.
In 2011, he was sentenced to 14 years
imprisonment for conspiracy with intent to traffic more than one kilogram of
heroin, a crime he allegedly committed prior to his inclination to Islam.
On the 29th of July, 2020, exactly two
days prior to ‘Eidul-Adha (1441AH), Loon was granted a compassionate
release from prison, spending nearly a decade behind bars.
Since the moment of conversion, Loon [Amir
Junaid Muhadith] has been a devoted Muslim. He continued to learn and
preach Islam at every given opportunity. In an interview granted by Aljazeera
in 2011, Loon expressed the following:
is walking his way out of my system. It’s happy being able to accept Islam,
finding the peace of mind I’ve always been searching for…
to Islam, I’ve been able to complete my searching. Now, I’m very much at peace
When asked if he’s no
longer a Bad Boy.
replied: “No, Bad Boy days are over, I’m now what you call a good boy…
However, what is particularly
interesting about Loon’s conversion story is how he practically divorced the
music industry, letting go of his fame without shame. This tremendous sacrifice
may only be appreciated by ex-lovers of music. If it’s hard for music consumers
to live without music, how about a musician who largely depends on music
production as a means of survival. Just imagine that!
Flashing back to our Jaahiliyyah days,
one heinous sin we took for granted is listening to music and watching films.
Hardly would you find a teenager without a list of favorite music and
In fact, some of us took pride in
foreign hip-hops thinking we were more civilized. What a destructive
civilization indeed! But, all thanks are due to ALLAH WHO has favored us with
the Sunnah, thereby becoming more conscious about the dangers of music and
And of mankind is he who
purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the Path of
Allah without knowledge, and takes it
(i.e Allah’s Path, Quran
verses) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment.
Surah Luqman, verse 6
Based upon the
understanding of the Companions, Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allaah have mercy on
him) commented that: this Aayah was revealed concerning singing and musical
instruments (lit. woodwind instruments)
(Tafseer Ibn Katheer,
Also, from the numerous
Ahadith which unequivocally prohibit music is where Allah’s Messenger
(salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) is reported to have said:

by al-Bukhaari ta’leeqan, no. 5590; narrated as mawsool by al-Tabaraani and
al-Bayhaqi. See al-Silsilah al-Saheehah by al-Albaani, 91]
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may
Allaah have mercy on him) said: The view of the four Imaams is that all kinds
of musical instruments are haraam.
It was reported in Saheeh al-Bukhaari
and elsewhere that the Prophet (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) said that there
would be among his ummah those who would allow zinaa, silk, alcohol and musical
instruments, and he said that they would be transformed into monkeys and pigs…
None of the followers of the imaams mentioned any dispute concerning the matter
of music. (al-Majmoo’, 11/576).
Therefore, it is high time the
music-lovers (among Muslims) say bye-bye to music. How would you continue to
enjoy something which invites Allah’s Anger? Repent today and break those
hip-hop CDs, burn the Fuji tapes, delete all musical records on your phones and
laptops. Never say never, many of us did the same and never regretted our
Worse still, even the so-called
‘Islamic music’ is not spared from the prohibition. They rather attract a
double punishment because it entails playing with Allah’s Verses, featuring
female dancers, and promoting all sorts of evil in the name of religion,
thereby misleading the unsuspecting Muslims. Don’t be deceived, did Allah not
When it is said to them:
“Make not mischief on the earth,” they say: ‘We are only rectifiers’.
Verily! They are the ones who make mischief, but they perceive not.
[Surah Al-Baqarah: verse 11
Finally, Loon’s autobiography
epitomizes a journey from darkness into light. Amir Junaid Muhadith (a.k.a
Loon) has repented from his musical lifestyle and dissociated from corrupt
companions, while he remains committed to spreading the legacy of Islam and
O You Music-Lovers! Don’t let Loon
become evidence against you on the Day of Judgment. It’s never late to say
goodbye to Music. The fact that music is haram is not a controversial matter
among scholars (as narrated earlier). As for the one who considers it to be
doubtful, didn’t the Prophet warned us to stay away from doubtful matters?
I pray to Allah to purify our hearts
from the disease of music, make clear to us it’s evils, and grant us the
ability to abstain from it.
